Any medical operation carries a minor risk that the treatment may not go as planned. The implantation of Artisan or Artiflex lenses is no exception to this rule. Complications may occur or the result may not be the desired one, despite the doctor’s efforts to perform a perfect implantation. Since the treatment of a healthy eye is involved, it is certainly wise to carefully consider all of the risks involved before you make a definitive decision.

Risks
Complications are relatively rare and can in most cases be dealt with during follow-up treatments. Very rarely, the quality of vision may deteriorate. Complications may include:
- Temporary increase of eye pressure. This, however, is only a temporary phenomenon which can usually be adjusted with drugs.
- Infections/inflammations. Early detection allows these to be treated easily.
- Lens replacement (if the power is incorrect) or lens reinsertion (if the lenses are not in a sufficiently central position).

Research findings Extensive clinical research takes place before any new medical product can be used and sold. Thus, the Artisan and Artiflex lenses have been repeatedly tested for their safety and effectiveness. All of these studies concluded that the lenses are both safe and effective. more... |
Remaining powers
Lens implantation always aims to completely "eliminate" the need for wearing glasses through the operation. However, just as with other types of refractive surgery this does not always happen. Often, the final power registers between 1 and 0 dioptres.
A remaining deviation between 1 and 0 dioptres allows you to function well without glasses, you are no longer dependent on glasses or contact lenses. Nevertheless, if your expectations regarding visual acuity are high, a slight corrective measure may be desirable. This could mean glasses or contact lenses, or even a "light" laser treatment in order to perfect your vision.
Chance of glare and halos
After lens implantation you may notice glare or halos around lamps in the dark. Most people who wear glasses or contact lenses are familiar with this phenomenon. This is caused by light rays which are reflected by the edge of the small lens. Since the pupil is larger in the dark, these reflections sometimes reach the eye. Experience shows that most people get used to this after a while and no longer consider this side effect to be a nuisance.
Customer satisfaction survey
A recent customer satisfaction survey regarding the Artiflex lens shows that, one year after treatment, the average satisfaction score on a scale from 1 (dissatisfied) to 10 (highly satisfied) equals 9.5.
