Usually the development of cataracts is gradual with a worsening of sight. Other symptoms include blurred or hazy vision, gradual loss of colour vision, a sensitivity to sunlight and double vision.
Cataract generally starts developing painlessly in the lens of the eye; it slowly causes difficulty in vision with increase in opaque or cloudy area. How quickly the cataract develops varies among individuals and may even be different between the two eyes. Most age-related cataracts progress gradually over a period of years.
Common symptoms of cataract include:
- a painless blurring of vision;
- glare, or light sensitivity;
- poor night vision;
- double vision in one eye;
- needing brighter light to read;
- fading or yellowing of colors.
If you come across any of the symptoms as given above, you need to visit your ophthalmologist at earliest. By performing a thorough eye examination, your ophthalmologist can detect the presence of a cataract.
